The International Training Institute on Friday launched their first bachelor programme, a significant milestone for the institute since its inception in 1999.
ITI chairman Sentil Kumaran Senthyval, during the launch, stated that the bachelor in accounting and finance was the first bachelor programme to be recognised by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (Dherst) for a private institution in the country.
“This is a pathway to education excellence and onwards.
“Accounting has been a core subject here at ITI.
“It is an important field which is needed in all businesses and so this programme will be beneficial for both students as well as companies and organisations,” Senthyval said.
The chairman thanked all lecturers and the management of the institution who were instrumental in making this milestone possible.
“We have overcome many challenges to get here today and we have also proven that private sector can help greatly in the space of education,” he said.
“James Cook University in Brisbane has also announced that other degree programmes would follow as the institute looks at transitioning into a university in the near future. The next two bachelor programmes will be bachelor in business management and bachelor in human resource management.
Certified Practicing Accountants Papua New Guinea (CPAPNG) manager-branding John Varey during the launch stated that of the 70, 000 plus grade 12 students graduating every year, only 12 per cent were able to secure spaces in tertiary institutions.
“The capacity to accommodate these students remains a significant challenge for the country.
“This is where private institutions like ITI have been exceptional in addressing this gap and in doing so, making a substantial contribution to nation building,” Varey said.
Varey, on behalf of CPA PNG, announced that the course not only met but exceeded the standards set by International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
“Students who graduate from ITI with Diploma or degree in accounting can enrol at CPA PNG and complete modules to become registered CPA PNG accountant.
“CPA PNG is a member of IFAC and thus certification to CPA PNG will allow you employment opportunities internationally,” he said.
The programme will start in July this year and will be in full swing in February next year.
